DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Debra K. Weiner\, MD\, FACP\, Professor of Medicine\, Psychiatry\, Anesthesiology and Clinical & Translational Science University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine\n \nThis presentation will discuss the evolution of Dr. Weiner’s research on chronic low back pain in older adults.  Her research developed organically in the context of her clinical care of these patients and has evolved into a multi-site clinical trial.  She hopes that this model can be applied to others who wish to develop a program of research. \nTo register for this webinar\, click here. \nThe 2019 webinar series\, Mechanisms and Management of Later-Life Pain\, is co-sponsored by TRIPLL and\nUniversity of Florida’s Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence.

SUMMARY:Cornell Translational Research Summer Institute Doing Research in Real-World Settings: Tools and Techniques for Success
DESCRIPTION:What is it?\nThe Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research in collaboration with the Translational Research Institute for Pain in Later Life (TRIPLL) is offering its 2nd annual Cornell Translational Research Summer Institute (CTRSI) from June 26th-28th\, 2019 at Cornell University in Ithaca\, NY. Over several decades\, the Bronfenbrenner Center has developed extensive expertise in conducting research in real-world settings and translating empirical findings into practice. The 2019 CTRSI will provide intensive training\, discussion\, and reflection on overcoming typical challenges in conducting research in real-world settings like service agencies\, health care institutions\, community organizations\, and in other non-academic settings. \nWho is it for?\nThe CTRSI is ideal for early-career researchers (including advanced graduate students and post-docs) interested in conducting research in real-world settings and for established investigators who wish to develop expertise in conducting research with communities\, agencies\, and organizations. \nHow do I register?\nRegistration for this event will open November 15th. Registration will be capped at 60 to assure a satisfying and productive participant experience. All registration information will be reviewed to assure representation across diverse professional backgrounds and participation goals. Acceptance status will be announced by January 30th. Payment is not due until registration is approved. For further information\, please contact Janis Whitlock at jlw43@cornell.edu. \nWhat will it cover?\nThe 2.5-day intensive will help researchers create effective strategies for the following: \n\nBuilding effective research relationships with agencies and organizations\nRecruiting and retaining diverse community participants\nAnticipating and dealing with Human Subjects challenges\nCreating dissemination plans for maximum impact\nSuccessful grant-writing for translational research\nPublishing and career management issues in translational research\n\nEach session of CTRSI 2019 will cover core principles and practices as well as solutions to key challenges researchers face in doing translational research. Using a workshop format\, sessions will be tailored to address specific participant cases and challenges\, while also providing general tips\, tools\, and techniques. By keeping enrollment limited\, we will offer personalized feedback and address issues and challenges participants bring from their own work. \n\nCornell Translational Research Summer Institute faculty (partial list)\nKarl Pillemer\, PhD\nSenior Associate Dean for Research and Outreach in the College of Human Ecology\nHazel E. SUMMARY:Assessment of Pain Modulation in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Joseph Riley III\, PhD\, Professor\, University of Florida College of Dentistry\n \nCommunity-based and clinical findings indicate that older adults are at greater risk for more frequent and prolonged pain and suffer from pain at multiple sites compared to younger cohorts.  Dr. Riley will present data from his sensory testing laboratory that demonstrate older adults exhibit diminished descending pain inhibitory capacity and increased pain facilitation.  An imbalance of these systems among older adults likely contribute to the increased risk for the development of persistent pain compared to younger adults. \nTo register for this seminar\, click here. \nThe 2019 webinar series\, Mechanisms and Management of Later-Life Pain\, is co-sponsored by TRIPLL and\nUniversity of Florida’s Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence.

SUMMARY:Psychological Therapies for Pain
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Robert D. Kerns\, PhD\, Professor of Psychiatry\, Neurology and Psychology at Yale University\n \nA broad array of evidence-based psychological approaches for the management of pain are currently available including mindfulness-based stress reduction\, progressive relaxation\, biofeedback\, hypnosis\, operant-behavioral therapy\, cognitive-behavioral therapy\, acceptance and commitment therapy\, couples and family therapy\, and supportive psychotherapy\, among others. The strength of evidence of efficacy and effectiveness for these approaches varies across specific pain conditions and settings and across outcome domains. Scientific knowledge and practice gaps\, particularly organizational\, provider and patient barriers to accessing psychological therapies for pain\, will be highlighted. \nTo register for this webinar\, click here. \nThe 2019 webinar series\, Mechanisms and Management of Later-Life Pain\, is co-sponsored by TRIPLL and\nUniversity of Florida’s Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence.

SUMMARY:June Webinar – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Title: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain in Older Adults\n\nPresenter: Julie Wetherell\, PhD\, University of California at San Diego \nOverview: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapy model that deemphasizes efforts to change aversive internal experiences and prioritizes living in accordance with deeply held values\, even in the presence of distress or discomfort. It is one of few therapeutic modalities that the American Psychological Association’s Division 12 (Society for Clinical Psychology) describes as having “strong research support” for chronic or persistent pain. Dr. Wetherell’s presentation will describe the ACT model and discuss the use of ACT for chronic pain\, with an emphasis on factors that may make ACT particularly appropriate for older adults.
