Title: Testing New Approaches to Inducing Positive Affect and Expanding a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Technique to Dialysis Patients in a Low Income, Community-Based Setting

Investigator: Carla Boutin-Foster, MD, Weill Cornell Medical College

Overview: This study will: 1) determine the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of an adapted MBSR intervention administered during dialysis on pain reduction at 6 months. Primary outcome: Pain will be measured with the 9-item Brief Pain Inventory, which measures intensity, quality, and relief from pain during the past week, 2) test the impact of MBRS on quality of life, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms, 3) conduct post-intervention interviews with key stakeholders (patients, providers, and caregivers) in order to identify which intervention components were deemed as most or least helpful. The overall goal of this project is to develop and test non-medical approaches to pain reduction and improving quality of life among patients with ESRD.
